About SF WiFi – Wireless Solutions

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

We are a Northern California wireless solution provider. We offer our clients wireless solutions including design, installation and support services. SF WiFi specializes in Hospitality Wireless, Hot Spot Wireless, point to point and wireless business solutions.

SF WiFi is noticing increased usage of handheld mobile devices across wireless networks. Clients come to us because their existing legacy equipment and “SOHO” solutions can not support today’s wireless multi media (WMM). Voice, video and data overwhelms their antiquated systems causing connectivity and bandwidth issues for the end user.

Let SF WiFi help your business succeed by providing a wireless network which can handle today’s heavy data rates and high throughput demands. SF WiFi can design and install a cost effective solution to satisfy these wireless needs. We also offer continued support services after the installation is complete.

Our Hotel wireless clients: SF WiFi understands that Wi-Fi has become an essential amenity within the hospitality industry. It is also the one thing people complain about the most due to poor performance and limited coverage. SF WiFi specializes in hospitality wireless solutions by installing faster, more reliable WiFi services at a lower overall cost of ownership. SF WiFi designs, installs, and continues to support the wireless networks that keeps guests happy and satisfied.

Union Square Plaza Hotel:“Our existing wireless network was always a problem and some guests would not book a room with us unless they could get Internet access. SF WiFi designed and installed a wireless solution and we are now very pleased. No more issues. Thanks SF WiFi.” Sal Patel Union Square Plaza Hotel

iPad WiFi: Does not automatically rejoin known WiFi networks

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Symptoms:
Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known WiFi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party WiFi routers that are dual-band capable when:

* Using the same network name for each network
* Using different security settings for each network

Hospitality Wireless: SF WiFi delivers complete wireless coverage

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Whether providing the traveler a comfortable room, television entertainment, or continental breakfast, our clients consider great hospitality is paramount. Our most recent client, The Majestic Hotel of San Francisco, offers the gracious traditions of yesteryear and today. They realized one of the essentials of the modern traveler is having seamless, reliable, and secure access to the Internet but with the present down economy the hotelier required a wireless solution which didn’t exceed their budget.

The Majestic Hotel contacted us about installing a more powerful and efficient wireless network than their existing system. They had been using a legacy wireless solution that had many issues including proper signal coverage. As a result, guests’ computers were constantly dropping off the Internet. This was causing the hotel to lose guests and lose revenue so they contacted SF WiFi to propose a guest wireless network solution for the 33,000 square foot property and we were awarded the project.

Hotel Overview

The Hotel Majestic was constructed in 1902 and is San Francisco’s oldest continuously operating hotel. With distinctive French bay windows, Edwardian styling with vintage architectural details and adorned with French and English antiques. The Majestic not only offers guest the gracious traditions of yesteryear but also provides the guest with all the modern essentials of today.

Hotel Specs: The property consists of 5 floors, 58 rooms, café bar and restaurant and 2 meeting rooms. Guests were complaining that the wireless coverage was limited, connections and performance was erratic. Adding additional Wi-Fi access points (APs) was not an option because there was no way to extend ethernet cabling throughout the property. The Majestic needed an innovative solution that would satisfy customers without disrupting business or breaking their capital budget.

SF WiFi gets the call – Project Requirements:

  • Wireless coverage throughout the entire hotel
  • Minimize the number of access points
  • Minimize, mitigate RF interference
  • Install AP’s where Ethernet can’t reach
  • Centralized and simplified management
  • Reduce install times
  • Self-configuring, self-tuning adaptive wireless
  • Reliable and stable with no support calls
  • Consistent performance

SF WiFi solution:

To work around and to minimize the need for additional ethernet cabling we designed a wireless mesh network. Under normal circumstances ethernet cabling is required for all conventional wireless equipment. The SF WiFi design solution implements a WLAN managed mesh network to extend wireless coverage into difficult areas. This design limited the amount of cable required, reduced costs and simplified the installation.

Benefits:

  • Reduced capital costs by eliminating the need to run ethernet
  • Dependable Wi-Fi signal quality
  • Single Wi-Fi solution for entire hotel
  • Mesh design simplified AP placement (product feature)
  • Automatic interference avoidance (product feature)
  • Automatic failover and resiliency (product feature)
  • Wi-Fi coverage with fewer APs (product feature)
  • Utilized Power over Ethernet
  • One third the cost of “other” wireless product solutions

Wireless observations while on vacation:

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

A vacation to the Midwest states revealed some interesting wireless networks.

Iowa – Hot spot wireless at highway rest stops. Corn, cows, and wifi.

Airports: Denver, San Jose, Omaha, Phoenix – Free wireless. Previously this was a pay service. Most networks with Cisco gear in use. To connect to one airport network  had to pass through 5 pages of captive portal to finally get access. Awkward.

Southwest Airlines – Wireless access on the flight. Pay service. Content filter, no videos. No thanks.

My niece watched Barney videos on my iPhone. Now that’s next generation wireless.

Hospitality Wireless Special

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

From what we hear from our Hospitality clients guest occupancy has been down during the winter. Business is starting to pick up a bit this spring and with summer approaching it is a good time to look at amenities and upgrade long overdue services.

Hotel guests are now pounding the hotel wireless networks with their iPhones, Netbooks, laptops and connecting to traffic intense sites like Pandora, YouTube, Hulu and maybe connecting back to their office for email and work. Nowadays almost no vacation lacks a few business emails.

A wireless network with spotty coverage, poor design, downtime, lack of features will drive guests away.

I have been told by a few clients that guests will not even check in if there isn’t sufficient wireless at the hotel.

SF WiFi resolves wireless network issues. Our Hotel General Managers are happy and the guests don’t complain to the front desk!! Well maybe guests still complain about the continental breakfast – but we can’t support that.
