Ruckus ZoneFlex R300

Ruckus ZoneFlex™ R300 Overview:

ZoneFlex R300, dual band 802.11n Indoor Access Point, BeamFlex, 2×2:2, 1-Port, PoE

High Performance, 802.11n Smart Wi-Fi Access Points with Adaptive Antenna Technology

The Ruckus ZoneFlex R300 delivers high-performance and reliable 802.11n wireless networking at the industry’s most affordable price point.  Unlike any other 802.11n wireless solution in its class, the ZoneFlex R300 combines patented adaptive antenna technology and automatic interference mitigation to deliver consistent, predictable performance at extended ranges with up to an additional 4dB of BeamFlex gain on top of the physical antenna gain and up to 10dB of interference mitigation.  Additional performance enhancements to signal gain can be attributed to the chip-based transmit beamforming capability adding 3 dB when associated to a compatible client.

Each ZoneFlex R300 integrates Ruckus-patented BeamFlex, a software-controlled, high gain antenna array that continually forms and directs each 802.11n packet over the best performing signal path. The ZoneFlex R300 automatically selects channels for highest throughput potential using Ruckus ChannelFly dynamic channel management, adapting to environmental changes. Once deployed, enterprises never have to worry about constant site surveys as the environment changes.

Coit Tower mural restoration

A very interesting project to be associated with as SF WiFi is providing wireless design, equipment, installtion and support for wireless services at Coit tower

More info:

One of the most vexing problems was updating and rehabilitating the tower without making it look like a new building. It’s a 1933 space that needs to be restored, not redone, city officials said.

Besides the waterproofing and the roof repairs, work is also being done to upgrade the tower’s aging plumbing and electrical systems and make it more accessible to the disabled. Outside lighting is being improved, and the gift shop and commercial space inside is being completely redone for the new concession operator, who will take over when Coit Tower reopens to the public sometime after mid-April.

The improvements are startling. The murals, already cleaned and partially restored, pop with unexpected color that’s enhanced by the improvement work that’s been done around them.

facebook – a New Way for Marketers to tell stories

An easier way to watch videos

“On mobile devices, all videos that begin playing as they appear on the screen will have been downloaded in advance when the device was connected to WiFi — meaning this content will not consume data plans, even if you’re not connected to WiFi at the time of playback”.

iOS 7 and Captive Portal Issues

The release of iOS 7 has created some issues for wireless users. Specifically for updated iOS users connecting to wireless networks with captive portal functions. This is not a wireless hardware issue. The standard iOS pop up to connect to splash page may not function. Apple has changed the way iPhone performs the test to see if the device is connected behind a captive portal. Splash pages can be accessed by simply opening a web browser although some users are not familiar with that technique.
There are other work a rounds and configuration fixes that can be applied to the wireless network. Contact SF WiFi for more information

The Data Perfect Storm

The perfect storm of wireless data hit our San Francisco and Bay Area wireless networks last week.

  • Oracle Open World brought in the people and our networks observed almost triple the typical number of wireless connected devices at our hospitality and enterprise clients.
  • The iPhone iOS update then pushed bandwidth usage and data downloads to a new level. It seemed everywhere we looked iPhones were downloading the update.
  • We even had a IT manager asking where was all this traffic was coming from while he admitted he was currently updating his iPhone

Fortunately for our clients SF WiFi designs and installs high capacity and high speed wireless networks. We did not have one downed wireless network, one system reboot or a single screaming hotel general manager during this data perfect storm.

In fact this “data storm” was a great time for us to observe our network infrastructure under increased stress, look at config options and offer clients tweaks to optimize performance.

And congratulations to Oracle Team USA for winning the America’s Cup.

During the weeks of competition SF WiFi caught small views of the races as we commuted the city from project to project.
