iPhone 5 and 5GHz

iPhone 5 will support 5GHz wifi – That has us excited.

What is 5GHz Wi-Fi?
5GHz is the “other frequency” that Wi-Fi client radios can use, besides 2.4GHz, to connect to an access point or hotspot. This will increase network user capacity and throughput. No presentation is complete without graphics:

Ruckus WirelessZoneFlex 7982

Ruckus ZoneFlex dual-band (5 GHz and 2.4 GHz concurrent) 802.11n Wireless Access Point
Ruckus ZoneFlex 7982 Overview:
The Industry’s Highest Capacity, Highest Performing Three-stream ZoneFlex 7982 802.11n Smart Wi-Fi Access Point

For enterprises and carriers requiring increased wireless performance, capacity, unparalleled ease of use and greater business value, particularly within high-density environments, the ZoneFlex 7982 is the most reliable and highest performing product in the industry. The ZoneFlex 7982 delivers consistent performance and maintains stable connections within high-capacity environments and to smart mobile devices that constantly change their location and orientation.
The simple variation of a device’s orientation can account for up to a 5x performance degradation among Wi-Fi products unable to adapt to such changes. To address these challenges, the ZoneFlex 7982 is the only three-stream 802.11n access point to combine dynamic polarization diversity with adaptive antenna arrays and transmit beamforming to give customers up to a 4x improvement in Wi-Fi performance, signal gain and reception.

Ruckus ZoneFlex 7982 is the industry’s first dual-band, three-stream 802.11n access point that incorporates Ruckuspatented BeamFlex™ adaptive antenna arrays. Coupled with transmit beamforming (TxBF), when available, the ZoneFlex 7982 delivers the highest throughput of any AP in its class.

The ZoneFlex 7982 ensures the most reliable connectivity within challenging and ever-changing RF environments. With BeamFlex, the ZoneFlex 7982 offers a 2-4x increase in performance and range and is capable of delivering up to 9 dB of signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) improvement and up to 15 dB of interference mitigation over other APs. Capable of supporting 500 concurrent clients, the ZoneFlex 7982 simultaneously supports spatial multiplexing and BeamFlex to deliver the best price/performance of any three-stream 802.11n AP.

With a stream throughput of 450 Mbps per radio, the ZoneFlex 7982 ensures maximum throughput to three-stream capable clients while also improving single and dual-stream client performance. This is achieved through the unique combination of adaptive antenna technology, predictive channel selection and adaptive polarization diversity. Backward compatible with all existing clients, the ZoneFlex 7982 can function either as a standalone AP or as part of
centrally-managed Wireless LAN with the Ruckus ZoneDirector Smart WLAN controller.

ZoneFlex 7982 is purpose-built for high-capacity, high performance and interference-laden environments such as airports, public venues, hotels, universities and conference centers. The perfect choice for data-intensive streaming multimedia applications, the ZoneFlex 7982 delivers picture perfect HD-quality IP video while supporting VoIP and data applications that have stringent quality of service requirements. smart Meshing makes the ZoneFlex 7982 ideal for reliably extending Wi-Fi services to areas where cabling Ethernet isn’t possible or economical — saving time and money.

iPad wifi signal issues

There are reports of Wi-Fi connectivity issues with the new iPad. Dozens have indicated that in locations with a good Wi-Fi signal, the iPad is not receiving the signal as well as other devices do.

Is there was a great app like WiFi Trak to measure the wireless signal on the iPad, iPhone…. Nope. The  iTunes store removed such apps over a year ago. Other methods to test.

Wireless Trending

We’ve read many articles this week about wireless offloading–802.11ac, 802.11u, in general, the future of wireless. This caught us reflecting on our clients’ wireless progressions.

We have a hotel client in San Francisco supporting wireless at their 16 story/120 room property. In the past year alone we have seen their guest wireless usage increase to more than double.

In 2011 we would see stats of 20-25 users passing 8GB of data. We now see 80 concurrently connected devices, passing 25-40GB of data a day. That’s practically a four fold increase of data in just a little over a year and these numbers are consistent across all our wireless hotel clients.

Our Take on Wireless Trending:
User capacity increases: mobile device driven
Bandwidth usage increases: video driven
Cell phone offloading: hasn’t occurred too much, this is the next trend
Coverage: everywhere. WiFi is not just in the lobby anymore
User expectations: system uptime, stability, ease of use, free
Customer expectations: coverage, stability, support WMM (data voice video),
Management features: simple dashboard view of system and usage stats.
