Wireless TV

AT&T’s U-Verse connects wirelessly to TVs
By The Associated Press
AT&T Inc.’s U-Verse TV service is going wireless — inside the home. Its new set-top boxes will use the home’s Wi-Fi to get their TV programming, with no need for a coaxial cable.
That means TV sets can be moved from room to room and still work.
“You could move your U-Verse to the patio for the football game if the weather’s nice or to the guest room if you have guests coming in,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer.
That’s not really why AT&T developed it, though. The company was looking for a way to cut installation time and cost, Christopher said. With wireless boxes, installers won’t need to run cable or drill through walls.
U-Verse is delivered with Internet technology rather than standard cable technology. That makes it easier for AT&T to send the signal wirelessly. Other, smaller phone companies have used wireless set-top boxes for a few years.
The service uses standard Wi-Fi and has about the same range. The boxes will be available starting next week for a one-time fee of $49, plus the standard monthly $7 box rental fee. They’re made by Cisco Systems Inc.
A Wi-Fi hotspot can serve up to two set-top boxes wirelessly. A home can have two more set-top boxes, but they would have to be wired up, since the hotspot has limited capacity. All four could show high-definition programming simultaneously.
AT&T Inc. sells U-Verse in areas where it’s the local-phone company. It has 3.6 million TV subscribers, making it the eighth-largest pay-TV provider in the U.S.
SF WiFi has installed WiFi TV at a few properties. On a recent SF project we saw several streaming devices running from one access point:

Apartment Wireless Project

The El Rey Apartments located in San Rafael were constructed in 1929. Similar to many San Francisco apartment buildings of the era, it is of the Mediterranean Revival architectural style. It is known as Marin’s first luxury apartment building. The architects of this handsome structure focused on the fine details, including the ornate lobby, decorative exterior molding and ceramic tile roof.

The property owners commissioned SF WiFi to design and install their new wireless network. This project entailed saturating the property with signal for tenant apartments and common areas. Our wireless solution provides superior coverage, ease of use management features to seamlessly support today’s mobile user.

Project: Wireless – 360 Residences

360 Residences Wireless Project

Conveniently located in downtown San Jose, the 360 Residences deemed it necessary to accommodate it technologically savvy clientele with wireless networking. SF WiFi was commissioned to design and install this new network for the impressive glass tower’s recreational and business areas.

Our designer recognized this network needed to

• Stable enough to support a high capacity of users
• Provide exceptional signal coverage throughout the building’s rooms and pool area
• and contain ease of use features.

These features are very important since the average person will use multiple wireless devices (mobile phones and computers) simultaneously. After installation our technicians measured the network’s stability and ensured it was seamless, reliable, and secure.

Soaring 23 story high rise above the SoFa district, the grand architecture and sweeping glass tower dramatically redefines the San Jose skyline.

Check out this link to a video of the property. The wireless network covers the pool, fitness and patio areas of the apartments. These areas can be seen starting at the one minute mark of the video. We were so impressed with the aerial shots and model rendering of the 23 story high rise that the SF WiFi marketing department thought we should share this with you. Enjoy.
